Big Bend Artist

Lindy Cook Severns

Old Spanish Trail Gallery and Museum hangs a significant collection of original Lindy Cook Severns regional landscape paintings in pastels and oils, plus a few wildlife and nature watercolors and drawings.

Former Director of Art of the American West for Heritage Auction Gallery, author Michael Duty says Lindy has

"an amazing ability to capture both the bold colors and dramatic formations of the far West Texas landscape, but also the subtle variations in light and shading...  she can skillfully present the grandest of vistas, but she also equally masters the most delicate details of sand, rock, and grass. She is particularly adept at painting the western sky in all of its drama and color. When I look at Lindy’s work, I feel an immediate kinship with her vision and love of the western landscape."

Lindy Cook Severns paints authentic southwest landscapes, wildlife and nature in soft pastels and traditional oils. Her dramatic, sweeping skyscapes are widely acclaimed, and the Fort Davis artist's vibrant landscape paintings are fresh, yet intricately and accurately detailed. Her landscape paintings document the essence of wilderness before civilization forever alters it. Her art conveys a sense of place, especially Big Bend country and the Davis Mountains of Far West Texas.

For two decades, Lindy copiloted a corporate jet for husband Jim, who says that flying gave the artist her affinity for  painting skies. The couple's hikes and drives provide other painting subjects. Lindy does small pastels en plein air (on location); larger works are done in her mountain studio in the Old Spanish Trail complex at Crow's Nest Ranch.

Painting the energy and motion of a subject is as important to Lindy Cook Severns as accurate drawing. In her skyscapes, you sense the winds aloft. You feel, as much as see grass waving in her landscapes' impressionistic foregrounds. Always, she paints what she knows, and that shows in her work.
