Across Texas, Indian paintbrushes spot spring pastures with vibrant, unexpected color. No matter how many times I see these spikes of red, I smile. As a girl, I thought Native Americans actually did use these wildflowers as paintbrushes, and closely investigated the colorful bracts to see if I could discover where the paint was stored. Showy companions of bluebonnets, these beloved roadside flowers shout out the beauty of wild Texas to all who pass by. Indian paintbrushes spot spring pastures with vibrant, unexpected color, a gift from Texas. (It's not ALL about bluebonnets!)
